Fire Suppression Inspector Application Procedure

Colorado Revised Statute 24-33.5-1206.4 requires that any design, installation, modification, alteration or repair of a fire suppression system shall be reviewed, inspected and approved by a certified fire suppression system inspector. In order to become certified as a fire suppression system inspector a letter from the agency's chief executive of a county, municipality or special district attesting that:

  1. The applicant is currently employed/contracted by the agency.
  2. The agency is responsible for fire sprinkler/code enforcement in their jurisdiction.
  3. The applicant has the responsibility to conduct fire suppression system plan review and/or inspections.
  4. That the applicant is qualified (knowledge, skills, and ability) to conduct fire suppression system plan review and inspections.

The applicant must also meet at least one of the following conditions to obtain the certification of fire suppression inspector.

  1. Posses a current and valid inspector certification issued by a nationally recognized organization which includes fire protection system plan review and inspection knowledge, and demonstrate to the administrator successful completion of course work in fire suppression system plan review and inspection.
  2. Demonstrate to the administrator, equivalent qualifications including education, training and experience. All documentation submitted must be relevant to fire protection systems.

Fire Suppression System Inspector Certification is valid for a period of three years from the date of issuance, unless earlier suspended or revoked. Renewal shall require the comletion of the online application accompanied by the following uploaded documents:

  1. A letter from the agency's chief executive attesting to the fact that the individual is still responsible for fire plan review and inspections and has maintained the knowledge, skills and ability, AND
  2. Documentation of twenty four hours (24) of continuing education hours relating to the field of fire protection including, but not limited to classes, seminars, and training conducted by professional organizations or trade associations.
  3. Renewal fee of $30.00.
